Ok, if you had the choice, would you prefer carpet or wood floor? We are debating. Of course there is lots more to consider than what we "prefer," but I want opinions.
Well, I have tile floor which in terms of cleaning is similar to wood floor. It is nice because you can actually get it clean with a broom and mop. A carpet is hard to get really clean without a steam vac or something like that. However, the advantage of carpet is that it is easier to make it 'look' clean with just the vacuum cleaner. A vacuum cleaner is way easier than first going over the floor with a broom and then using a mop and waiting for it dry or going over it once again to dry it. A wood floor is pretty and can be cozy with a few area rugs. Your grandkids would prefer that you keep your nice plush green carpet. : )
Ok, so what about half and half? I know what you mean about the kids, but... Now what about carpet in bedrooms and wood floor in living, dining and hall?
I would put wood in only the most travelled areas - or most likely areas for spills. Especially if you have the windows open alot. Wood floors have to be swept or dusted a couple times a week.
I have lived all over the U.S., have been married for over 33 years, am the mother of three grown children, the grandmother of three adorable granddaughters. I teach second grade in California and I used to teach first grade in Missouri. I love little people and dogs. I love reading, talking, and learning. I'm generally happy with my life!

One other thing. Though carpet can become dirty or worn in well traveled areas, it is also absorbing sound. Are you thinking of cork floors?
Thanks Matt, good points!
